Obasanjo, Abdulsalami, Governors to Attend Launch of Sule Lamido’s Explosive Political Memoir ‘Being True to Myself’

Being True to Myself, an explosive political memoir by Alhaji Sule Lamido, former Governor of Jigawa State and a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), will be formally presented to the public on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at the NAF Conference Centre, Abuja.

According to the Organising Committee, the event will be chaired by former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), with former President Olusegun Obasanjo serving as Special Guest of Honour. The book will be reviewed by former Senate President and former PDP National Chairman, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu.

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday in Abuja, Chairman of the Organising Committee and Senator representing Jigawa South-West, Mustapha Khabeeb, described the landmark occasion as one that will “unbundle the real story of Nigeria’s political trajectory”—from the tail end of the Second Republic, through the military era, to the birth and evolution of the Fourth Republic.

According to him, Lamido’s autobiography offers a rare insider’s account of the dramatic twists, betrayals, and power struggles that have shaped Nigeria’s democratic journey. “It is not just a personal narrative,” Khabeeb stated, “but a political compendium capturing the soul of Nigeria’s governance and democratic history.”

He further noted that the book delves deep into Lamido’s evolution as a radical political actor, public servant, and elder statesman. “The memoir is expected to shed light on his role in major political developments, including his involvement in the June 12 movement, the formation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and his tenure as Minister of Foreign Affairs under President Obasanjo—who also wrote the foreword and will be present at the event.”

Also expected at the high-profile launch are former and serving governors, members of the National Assembly, business leaders, traditional rulers, and political stakeholders from across the country.

Senator Khabeeb highlighted Lamido’s unwavering commitment to political ideals, noting that his two-term governorship of Jigawa State brought transformative change despite intense opposition and politically motivated legal battles.

“He was tried, alongside his sons, for seven years on trumped-up charges and was ultimately vindicated. That’s a story worth telling,” he said.

With its candid reflections, bold truths, and historical revelations, Being True to Myself is poised to resonate with historians, political scientists, and Nigerians who yearn for principled leadership and a deeper understanding of the nation’s complex past.

“This is not just a book launch,” Khabeeb concluded. “It is a moment of national reflection and an invitation to examine the roots of Nigeria’s enduring challenges through the lens of a man who has both lived—and shaped—its history.”
