…Promises 24-hour Security Patrol on Waterways
The Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, has reiterated that the primary cause of recent mishaps on the nation’s waterways is the failure of operators to comply with the authority’s regulations.
Speaking today on Channels TV’s Morning Brief programmr, Mr. Oyebamiji cited a recent tragedy in Niger State as an example, attributing the incident to overloading and nighttime travel—both of which violate NIWA’s safety regulations.
He further emphasised that the agency is intensifying efforts to crack down on errant operators, stating that those who continue to flout the rules will face severe penalties. Mr. Oyebamiji assured waterway users that NIWA has deployed patrol officers to ensure 24-hour monitoring of the waterways, in order to improve safety.
In addition, Mr. Oyebamiji highlighted some of his key achievements since assuming office, to include the launch of the Waterways Code, which provides a comprehensive framework for the safe and efficient operation of inland waterways. He also mentioned the inauguration of several projects aimed at enhancing the infrastructure and overall functionality of Nigeria’s waterways.
He also took the opportunity to discuss NIWA’s ongoing partnerships with states that have navigable waterways, affirming that the agency is committed to strengthening these collaborations. Mr. Oyebamiji urged operators to adhere to safety guidelines, stressing the importance of doing so for the well-being of passengers and the integrity of the waterways.
He emphasised that NIWA’s focus is on enforcing regulations, launching new initiatives, and enhancing security measures, adding that “we are committed to ensuring safer and more regulated waterways across the country.”
