Vice President Kashim Shettima, accompanied by members of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), led a New Year homage to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at his Ikoyi residence on Wednesday, reaffirming their commitment to supporting his administration’s development agenda.
During the visit, President Tinubu emphasized the critical role of governors in driving Nigeria’s prosperity, describing them as the most vital link to the nation’s growth. Highlighting their influence on food security, economic stability, and grassroots development, he stated, “The Federal Government accounts for about 30 to 35 percent of the allocated revenue; the rest comes to you. The agricultural value chain depends on you. You own the land, and the job is in your hands.”
The President urged stronger collaboration between federal and state governments to address pressing challenges, including local government autonomy, agricultural productivity, and currency stability.
Dispelling speculations of discord over local government autonomy, Tinubu clarified, “There were gossips that we had disagreements on local government autonomy. No. Just drive development at the local government. Nobody wants to take them away from you, but we need collaboration.”
He also called on governors to lead efforts in improving agricultural production, viewing it as a pathway to economic stability. “We have to work harder, grow more, and ensure the situation of our currency improves. Nigeria will see prosperity, but it requires consistent effort from all of us,” Tinubu added.
Reflecting on the administration’s journey, the President expressed optimism about the nation’s resilience and leadership, stating, “I am glad I asked for this job, and Nigerians gave me the mandate. We’ll be on this voyage together.”
Tinubu also announced plans to visit Enugu State on January 4 as part of his nationwide engagement with the states.
In a notable recognition, the President welcomed his selection as Man of the Year by ThisDay newspaper. Abdulrahman Abdulrazak, NGF Chairman and Kwara State Governor, described this accolade as a testament to the administration’s policies, which he said are yielding tangible progress.
Highlighting agricultural advancements, Abdulrazak cited Jigawa State’s bumper harvests and ongoing efforts to strengthen food security. He lauded the President’s reforms, which he credited with enhancing state revenue and accelerating developmental projects.
“We are getting more funding due to the restructuring of the economy. Yes, there is inflation, but we are overriding it,” the Kwara State Governor stated, while pledging the governors’ unwavering support for Tinubu’s administration.
The homage, symbolizing unity and shared commitment to Nigeria’s progress, underscored the collaborative efforts required to achieve the nation’s development goals.
